A disconnect between the British people and their rulers is nothing new. For decades, for example, the public has supported restoration of the death penalty, but hardly any senior politician dares espouse it. The disconnect is not, however, always irredeemable.
For years, a section of British public opinion wanted to leave the European Union. No major political party agreed. The more the public was thwarted, the more estranged they felt from Brussels and, indeed, from their own elected representatives. When the pro-EU David Cameron made – for him – the fatal decision to hold a binding referendum on the question, he misread public opinion and lost.
This happened only nine years ago, and it should have warned the country’s political class that they ignore the masses at their peril. Sadly, it did not. Under the last Conservative administration – notably during Boris Johnson’s chaotic rule – little was done to limit legal immigration. Worse, the procedures for handling illegal immigrants – all claiming, often preposterously, to be asylum seekers – completely broke down.
Before the 2024 general election, which Labour won by a landslide, Sir Keir Starmer (for the last 15 months Britain’s prime minister) promised to smash the people trafficking gangs that were overloading rubber dinghies with illegal migrants on the French coast and sending them across the 22 miles of the English Channel. The gangs remain unsmashed, and the boats continue – in one day last week, 1,100 illegal migrants arrived. Much of the usually passive British public has had enough.
Incapable of processing the migrants quickly, struggling to deport those with no right to immigrate and constantly thwarted by human rights lawyers, the British government has had to house thousands in former hotels, often in town centres, and in disused military camps near rural villages.

I kid, of course. It’s more likely Starmer will make it a hate crime to fly the English flag anywhere except on government flagpoles.

The disconnect between ANY government throughout the ages and the people is nothing new.
A few control freaks get into power thinking they're entitled to rule over everyone else, all for their own good of course, and then just run roughshod over them.
