Comey Indictment Looks Like a Mistake
Powerlineblog ^ | September 26, 2025 | John Hinderaker

Posted on 09/26/2025 6:23:39 AM PDT by lasereye

Today a grand jury in northern Virginia indicted James Comey on two criminal counts that I take to be essentially the same.

The indictment has nothing to do, at least directly, with Comey’s misconduct in connection with the Russia Collusion Hoax. He deserves to go down in history as a betrayer of his office and of the American people for that shameful conduct. Here, he is charged with a single misdeed: lying when he told a Senate committee, in response to a question from Ted Cruz, that he did not authorize someone at the FBI to be an anonymous source.

A source on what? I am not certain, but I believe the question related to the FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton, not Donald Trump. No doubt this will be made clear in days to come.

The grand jury was convened in northern Virginia, presumably because it would be impossible to get a conviction in the District of Columbia, and possibly hard even to get a grand jury to indict Comey. But I seriously doubt whether the government can get a conviction in northern Virginia, either.

The U.S. Attorney who is bringing the charges against Comey is Lindsay Halligan, who has just been sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for Eastern Virginia, has no experience as a prosecutor, and has little experience, period. She appears to be another instance of Donald Trump’s fondness for good-looking women lawyers. That isn’t going to get her far in this case.

News reports indicate that the grand jury balked at bringing a third count that did relate to the Russia Collusion Hoax.

To me, this shapes up as a worst-case scenario. Yes, elements of the base will be gratified that James Comey has been criminally indicted. But the case has little or nothing to do with the evils that Comey actually perpetrated, and for which he deserves to be infamous. And the prosecution, in all likelihood, will fail. The press will portray that failure as a vindication of Comey and a repudiation of what we all know about the worst scandal in American history.

So I fear that President Trump and his minions have traded short-term gratification for long-term fiasco.

Sounds like this prosecutor is in over her head. I infer that she was appointed because she'll do whatever Trump wants. As Hinderaker says Comey will probably be acquitted and it will actually benefit him.

Trump does some brilliant things and some brainless things. This appears to be in the latter group. I hope I'll have to eat my words.

Well boys and girls, all we need to do is use the term “Highest Police Officer” when writing stories about him. We all know how the Libs feel about da police……

He clearly lied to Congress. Let him spend his money fighting the gov’t like he did to Trump.

I think there are bigger things he will be hit with. This is just a way to get it rolling.

Gotta disagree. this is one guy’s take.

Discovery is a wonderful tool for exposure. He can deny and forget all he wants. But the evidence appears to compelling and voluminous.

Comey may get acquitted, and IF convicted, will likely receive a slap on the wrist sentence form this judge.

The goal is to mark him as a liar and a felon. BEing a felon for real has life altering consequences.

The issue was the statute of limitations, that limited what charges could be brought.

Minions? The author let his mask slip a little. That is no neutral article. The author has an agenda.

Agree. Look for additional charges as we roll along.

Agree. If all we can do is bankrupt them with lawfare, I’m good with it. That’s what they’ve done to countless people on our side.

Hindeker also adds the sarky line about Trump picking lawyers. I take his commentary with a grain of salt, he is far from unbiased.

Just that comment alone pretty much makes his article more a screed than thoughtful analysis. When a lawyer employs an ad hominen they show thier lack of reasoned discourse.

~~~
As we learned so well during four+ years of lawfare against republicans.
And Comey has the gall to say that a tyrant uses fear as his weapon.
Once again, they project their own contexts and motives and tactics onto us.
It is they who wanted to use fear against us. Fear of even participating in the government would cause prosecution. Pre-dawn raids. Technicality entrapments that result in long term incarcerations. Endless suits that destroy reputations and bankrupt people.
That is their world!
If they get a taste of their own medicine, perhaps they will think twice about weaponizing the law. I doubt it. But one can always naively hope
yes i think this is the first of charges to come, aided by the evidence found in those burn bags hidden away in FBI
offices. Hinderaker McCarthy Comey et al are not privy to the contents. sleepless nights, diminishing bank account balances,family stress lie ahead for James. visions of seashells, days of arrogant smirks are a thing of the past. and we shall see what we shall see.
