“Significant strategic events”, such as a midterm election.

The reserve is 714 million barrels, of which 404.7 million barrels is left. The Data:

The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has been drawn down by several presidents over the years, but the largest recent depletion happened under President Joe Biden.

In 2022, during the surge in global oil prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Biden administration authorized the release of about 180 million barrels from the SPR — the largest drawdown in U.S. history.

Previous presidents have also released oil for various reasons:

George H. W. Bush (1991) — during the Gulf War.

Barack Obama (2011) — during supply disruptions caused by the Libyan civil war.

Smaller emergency releases were also ordered under George W. Bush (Hurricane Katrina, 2005) and Donald Trump (supply disruptions).

So while multiple administrations have used it, the current low level (around 404 million barrels) is mainly due to the Biden administration’s 2022 release.

It’s 30 days worth if 100% of the market is stopped. That will never happen as we got our own. I say offer it to Cuba free of charge only after they get rid of the communists. Let them drive all over holy hell. Put all our junkyard cars(Fords) on barges and trade them for a classic oldie-lock them into American vehicles. We get 100% of their cigars for one year distributed at the 7-11’s.

So tell me. Isn’t that strategic?

Fill it up.

Trump filled it in his first term using cheap oil. Schumer raised hell about it but had no issue with Diaper Joe draining it.

Oragnic Panic, that is a good question. In my research I ran across an article that talked about some of the caverns not being in the best of shape.

The reservoir in Los Angeles that was empty for 11 months before the brush fires in Jan 2025 and it is still only partially filled by the end of June 2025. Just 16 months to partially filled it with water....
45 million gallons out of 117 million to be full....

I bet the Strategic Oil reserve is filled quicker then the water in the reservoirs.
