If you are involved in a legal dispute and the judge in the case assigns the two parties to a mediation process, would you go into that process without objecting if you found out the mediator was the business partner of the opposing party

You can't possibly be that naive.

You are correct, I am not.

But in your innocence, you asked a "have you stopped beating your wife" type of question. Whether I would object or not depends on whether the mediation is binding.

Since you have boldly moved this deep into the topic, you should know that court proceedings are binding and arbitration ought to be binding if it is worth anything at all.

Mediation, however, if court-ordered is generally not binding, and the courts allow the parties to each select or agree on the mediator(s). It is typically a "see if the parties can work it out" type of process.

So that leaves us with the question, "Is Trump qualified to serve as a (non-binding) mediator in a dispute in which he has an interest in both parties?"

The behavior of each of the parties in this case suggests they believe he is qualified.

In Russian Yekaterinburg, a 75-year-old pensioner was convicted for calling Stalin a dictator and a murderer.

The court found Nikolay Dolgushin guilty of "rehabilitation of Nazism" over his comments on the Odnoklassniki social network: "The Second World War was started by the dictator and murderer Stalin," and "It was the murderer and dictator Stalin who declared war on peaceful Poland."

The pensioner was sentenced to 1 year and 2 months on probation and banned from using the Internet for 1.5 years. He was also ordered to register with a psychiatrist.

In today's Russia, it turns out that a mentally stable person who calls things by their proper names is required to undergo psychiatric treatment.
