Then who DO they support? The world wants the Mad Mullahs gone, and the world prefers that citizens choose their own leaders. Prince Reza has been at least talking the talk for Western reforms for decades. He has SOME legitimate claim to leadership in the nation. He was trained to be a jet fighter pilot by the US. That's not the worst resume.

Iran should be able to pick their own leaders and not have someone thrust upon them especially by another country. Pahlavi is seen by Iranians as a western puppet and few if any would support him.
I originally wrote it for a leftist publication, which refused to publish it, despite the perfunctory nod to “fossil fuels bad”. I didn’t go all in on global warming. For many reasons beside their rejection of this piece, I no longer bother with Counterpunch. New English Review took it as is. I’m glad you appreciated the historical side of it.
