Ukraine is gaining the upper hand. Putin will be terrified
The Telegraph ^ | 02 June 2025 | Owen Matthews

Ukraine’s extraordinary attack deep inside Russia has, at a stroke, rewritten the rules of modern war. On Sunday a swarm of small drones, each costing under $500, rose over four Russian airfields deep inside Siberia and the Arctic and destroyed over forty strategic bombers reportedly worth over $7 billion. Thanks to meticulous planning, sophisticated military imagination and an underdog’s boldness of vision, Kyiv’s forces have landed a stunning blow on their far stronger opponent, opening a new chapter in the history of human conflict.

The question that will be haunting Putin is – what’s next? Ukraine’s famously stone-faced chief of military intelligence, or HUR, Major-General Kyrylo Budanov, has built his covert operations forces into a weapon as deadly, if not more so, than Israel’s Mossad, its only international rival.

And like the Biblical champion Goliath, it is precisely the vast lumbering size of Russia that makes it fatally vulnerable to small but precisely aimed projectiles from David’s small but deadly slingshot.

Many of the details of Sunday’s drone operation come from the Ukrainian side, so may be taken with a pinch of salt. But the basic logistics of the strike are in no doubt. Ukrainian military engineers, possibly already inside Russia, covertly loaded dozens of explosives-laden drones into special compartments set into the roofs of standard 40-foot steel shipping containers. Using a network of haulage companies set up for the purpose, Ukrainian operatives recruited truck drivers via commercial apps to drive their loads to specific designations next to military airfields thousands of miles away from the Ukrainian border.

At a predetermined time the drones buzzed into the air and headed for the airfields with their deadly payloads –

Zelensky reminds my of a t-shirt a grade school friend wore with an elephant about ready to step on a mouse that was flipping him off. (Zelensky reminds me of the mouse.)

So, tell us how YouCrayne will get their Territory back.

Perhaps not. But they may draw a line in the sand and end the war.

Similar to Korea.

Aside from the hyperbole, and the actual damage, Russia has to be concerned about one major problem.

That Ukraine could position weapons and has operatives deep inside Russia.

Four years into a war on their border, you’d think that keeping out stuff from Ukraine would be tightly controlled.

This involves the trucks, containers, launch systems and drones.

Does seem odd for Ukrain to discuss the specifics, which may mean they don’t have anymore such equipment in place.

Or maybe they just knew Russia already had all the evidence after the attacks.

It won’t seem like such a brilliant move if Russia decides to nuke the Ukraine.

Russia literally has the capacity to turn Ukraine into a parking lot if it chose to do so, and has for whatever reasons decided to continue a slow slog for territory.

This is an assumption and an assertion. Other than the nuclear option, I do not see evidence of it. Perhaps the estimates of Russian power were way on the high side.

It appears to me Russia is doing everything it can to win, short of the nuclear option. They have been stymied at every turn. The war is, effectively, a stalemate.

I am willing to listen to argument that Russia has far more manpower and non-nuke equipment at their disposal, which for some weird reason they chose not to use. It seems unlikely to me.

The territory for which Putin is fighting is populated with Russians while Zelensky would have no compunction about tearing up those areas (such as the Donbass) as he was before the Russians came in.

The fact these planes in question have not been carpet bombing Ukrainian, is indeed holding back.

Russia does not fight wars like the US, never has.. but if you believe Russia has been all in, short of nuclear, that’s just not accurate at all.

As to claims of 250-300k Russian casualties to only 70k Ukranian casualties... color me beyond skeptical of such claims such disproportionate results.

With those WWII tanks they called back from Indonesia?

Any drones left over that can go after Russia’s missiles? Ukraine may have struck an impressive blow, but it’s the missiles that they’ve now put into play.

Putin planned for a two-week war to take Ukraine. Now, 3 1/2 years later Russia is going broke.

As am I. I do not think 250k casualties - or more - are unlikely on both sides.

The planes have not been carpet bombing Ukraine because Putin does not want to lose the planes. Many similar planes have been launching standoff weapons into Ukraine.

Russia had already lost a significant part of its air assets before this recent strike.

Russia has to worry about whether Ukraine has put any nukes into Russian territory. They have already demonstrated the ability to place things in Russian territory, and exert command and control. Ukraine built Soviet nukes.

“If I was in Ukraine, anywhere in Ukraine, military or civilian, I would be far more worried than Putin is about “what’s next”.”

Is Putin certain - absolutely certain - that Ukraine does not have dirty bombs or even working nukes? Is Putin confident than his military can seal the Russian border and prevent attacks deep into the motherland?

Putin is supposed to be a KGB chess player. Maybe he is.

Disagree as to the reason: The areas over which they've been fighting have (had) a large number of ethnic Russians. From what I can tell, Putin's motive has been Russian nationalism from the beginning.

Fueled military aircraft on the tarmac seems like a legitimate target during wartime. No reports of civilian casualties.

It’s astounding this “The vax is good for you” level of reporting is tolerated.

The Ukes better be very, very concerned about what happens next.
