Background Checks Show Gun Sales Continue Slow Decline

The National Instant Background Check System (NICS) numbers for firearm sales and background checks in April 2025 continue the slight decline we have been seeing over the last year. April 2025 gun sales were about 3.7% less than those of April 2024. April 2025 background checks were about 3.2% less than those of April 2024.

If you look at the last 26 years of April data for adjusted NICS, which is a close approximation of firearm sales, 2025, while lower than the last five years, is close, even a little higher, than the sales seen since the election of Barack Obama to his second term in 2012.

NSSF ReportNSSF Report: Month of April – 26-Year History NSSF-Adjusted NICS Last 12 Months year-over-year data.

Firearm sales have been at historically high numbers for more than a decade. Several factors have contributed to these sales.

The importance of the political scene cannot be overstated. President Barack Obama declared that his goal was to “fundamentally transform the United States”. He came very close to doing so. The two elections of President Donald Trump, with the disastrous presidency of Obama surrogate Joe Biden during the intervening four years, have been a strong counter-revolution against the policies of the Obama/Biden presidencies. The resulting uncertainty and reasonable fear of absurd economic, international, and domestic policies sent firearm sales skyrocketing. As the second Trump term unfolds, unraveling the absurdities of the Obama/Biden policies continue to present an unknown, if more hopeful, future.

Technological change is another important factor. Decreasing costs of firearms manufacture, brought about by less expensive materials, greater automation in manufacture, and strong international and domestic competition, make very good firearms available at prices far below comparable firearms only two decades ago.

Guns and ammunition are far less expensive today, in terms of purchasing power, than they were 20, 30, 50 years ago.

Isn’t it ironic that gun sales do better when a gun grabber democrat is in office?

How many States have ‘concealed carry’ permits that bypass NICS?

The answer is “at least one”, but I don’t know the complete answer.

I’ve been chained to the reloading bench lately. Doing a few thousand rounds on a single stage press is time consuming.

Fortunately I have a ton of supplies I bought way before prices went crazy and now that I’ve retired I’ve got the time to do it.

Last week I finished off 1,000 9mm Hornady hollow points. Before that it was 1,000 .45 Hornady hollow points. Before that it was .38 and .357.

This week is all the Lake City 5.56 mm I’ve got laying around. I hate crimped primer pockets with a passion.

There are 25 states where at least one permit is acceptable as a substitute for a NICS check.

Most are Concealed Carry permits, but there are a couple, such as in California, which are unusual. I recall California has something like a “movie special effects” permit.

You could probably fit a workbench in your bedroom if you got rid of your wife’s dresser. ;)

I remember in 1970, The Denver Post Sunday addition magazine had an article on those E-e-v-il “SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIALS!”

After a spew about how evil they were they declared ANY firearm that cost $45 dollars or less was an SNS.
They used a Ruger MK II as an illustration.
Today the Ruger would be around $450.00 or higher. One web page shows they are worth (new) $750.

A few years back, I saw a real cheapo revolver that in 1968 would sell for $12 in a pawn shop with a price tag today of $129.

If the silencer clause passes the budget bill, sales will skyrocket!

I agree. Silencers enhance the shooting experience a great deal.

LOL!

My wife is the one who bought my current bench AND helped me set it up. She likes me to keep her ammo supply topped off. So I think I’ll keep her dresser right where it is.

When your wife’s favorite gun is a .44 it’s wise to keep her happy.

I could probably fit a progressive if I got rid of the MEC Jr 12 gauge one that I’ve never used. I don’t reload shotgun shells. My A300 gets nothing but the best.

Happy armed wife, longer life.

I don’t reload shotgun shells either. The old Mossberg 88 gets whatever’s on sale.
