If European Jews during WWII were enslaved and starved, why is that be so much less awful than killed?

Some of them were starved. I knew a doctor who worked for the military, who treated starving patients as the U.S. Army moved into Germany.

I think maybe some are claiming that they were starved unintentionally because of the Allies war effort. Certainly, Nazis put lowest priority on feeding prisoners. But we know that Nazis were killing on an industrial scale using gas, and occasionally they used guns to kill them.
