April 5th - Douglas MacArthur's Death Contrasted With Kurt Cobain's Suicide

General Douglas MacArthur died on April 5th 1964. In the following days 150,000 people viewed his casket.

20 years later April 5th is probably the day singer Kury Cobain died by a self inflicted gunshot to the head. His suicide note included these words: “I have a goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy and a daughter who reminds me too much of what i used to be ....... And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can’t stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable, self-destructive, death rocker that I’ve become.”

I believe the coincidence of dates is God’s way of getting us to think about the relative meaning of these men’s lives.

Who gives a flying fig about a loser like Kurt Cobain anyway? So he wrote a couple hit songs, he was still a real creep and a loser.

The Bataan Death March survivor I knew did not think much of MacArthur.

Probably true of every commander there ever was. There are other guys who would tell you MacAuther could walk on water. The truth is always somewhere in between.

But the fact remains, there was nothing he could have done to stop the Japanese from talking the Philippines. Blaming him for that loss is unfair.

I think his point was that the Americans would have suffered fewer losses in the initial attack if MacArthur had reacted more quickly to the news from Hawaii.

IIRC, the “initial attack” was air strikes on the meager air forces we had in the islands. There were not much in the way of casualties in those. The land invasion came later and MacArthur wisely retreated to the Bataan peninsula were he could and did hold off a superior force for a number of months.
