Donald Trump’s New Tariffs Could Be a Fatal Blow to China’s Economy
19FortyFive ^ | 2/4/2025 | Gordon Chang

Posted on 02/04/2025 12:33:49 PM PST by whyilovetexas111

In these circumstances, Xi Jinping has only one way to rescue the Chinese economy: export more. In practice, he has put the fate of his regime in America’s hands. The United States is by far the world’s largest market, and it cannot be replaced in any realistic time frame.

Moreover, both the European Union and so-called “Global South” countries, perhaps inspired by American moves, are beginning to erect tariff barriers to Chinese goods of their own.

We’d better gear up and start manufacturing our own critical medicines that are now made in China.

Gordon Chang is a China hater. The skies over there will always be falling.

The good news is Taiwan will be safer as the Chicom economy corrects itself.

Well maybe they should stop spending so much on their navy.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving government.

No, it is NOT the point. It is a RESULT that should be addressed.

The point of an import tariff is to promote domestic industry. Have you been sleeping in class again?

You’re right. Chang has spouted the same things for years.

I like him but he needs to re-focus.

I know that. But there is no talk of doing it in regard to medicine.

I know a Pharmaceutical rep and I asked him when more pharmaceuticals were going to be made in the USA and he said he hasn’t heard a peep on that and said it’s crazy..

Peter Zeihan has been saying the same thing for a couple years now too.
He says that China has peaked.

FYI, the Matthews China Fund agrees.
It peaked in late 2021.
It has been scraping around bottom the last two years.

How do I know this?
I own it :(
I bought it when Slow Joe was selected. It went up for about 10 months then tanked. It hit a low last year and has recovered some but is still off about 40% from where I own it.

That and a Solar ETF are my very worst investments.

“Donald Trump's New Tariffs Could Be a Fatal Blow to China's Economy”

Joke post?
Chine sells vastly more of their manufactured products internally in China than to America, like smart phones, HDTV’s, consumer electronics and everything else because they have like 4 times the population of America and have been growing far faster than America has.
Who writes this nonsense anyway.?

Mr Chang has been talking up 'China's imminemt collapse' for a decade now. That unsustainable military machine keeps getting bigger. A desperate tyrant is apt to use it. If he does, life will not be so good, anywhere.

Hopefully, Trump can find Xi a way out of that blind alleyway to the benefit of all concerned. If he does, he'll deserve his aspirations.

It would be sad to see them collapse completely.

It would be better if they would just be nice. And, stop stealing our ideas.

Gordon Chang has been saying this for ten years. He was incorrect until about three years ago. They have yet to recover from Covid.
Their real estate market is a mess.
They have lost a lot of manufacturing to other countries now.
A lot of corporations have moved electronic manufacturing to other places.
A lot of textile manufacturing has also moved to other lower cost countries.
Basically, China has pissed off a lot of companies.

Almost all their consumer electronics manufacturing is still in China,
For example over 70% of all smart phones are still made in China, including most of the parts.
Similar for HDTV’s.
Chine just dominates in consumer electronics.

Oh well, I’m sure China and Europe will be happy to subsidize pharma company R&D costs for their new products.
