Some years ago there were rumblings of a gang fight in a north side neighborhood. Finally, gunfire erupted. A woman and her granddaughter, on their way to a fruit market, were gunned down. Witnesses said the gang member who was in charge when things went down was black and who had a foreign accent. A police spokesman on TV said they knew right away from the description who he was. He was an African here illegally who had been arrested twenty-four times before.

I am sure it was cold comfort to the family of the deceased that the police knew —right away, no less— who the murderer was.
