No. I am speaking strictly on the science, and not some antivax misrepresentation of science.

It is simply too early to try to get people vaccinated against H5N1. That is because RNA viruses (like coronaviruses and influenza viruses) mutate fairly rapidly. Influenza viruses are masters at mutating because of the structure of their genome.

The current H5N1 viruses are minimally transmissible between people. They will have to mutate to become more transmissible. That mutation will change the hemagglutinin (the “H”) and neuraminidase (the “N”) proteins. Influenza vaccines are targeted at the hemagglutinin protein. That means that if a vaccine targets the current strain of H5N1, it will not be very effective against a strain that has mutated to become highly transmissible.

Thus, it would waste a lot of time, money, and resources to try to vaccinate large numbers of people against the current H5N1. If/when the H5N1 mutates to become more transmissible, then it will be worth the research, development, and production costs to roll out a vaccine.
