A couple of days ago we had a thread about the use of police force used on spectators at the Florida/Georgia Football played in Jacksonville last Saturday.
Today, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released multiple videos of two incidents that took place, both incidents the cops striking citizens with closed fists.
These videos with audio show multiple angles of the incidents.
The video is an hour long and can be fast forwarded to show what happened leading up to the incidents where the cops escalated the use of force.
In the end the cops were cleared of improper use of force.
Without having to view an hour of video, can you summarize why the cops felt justified in what they did?
According to the Sheriff, officers only respond to an incident when requested by stadium security, in the first incident stadium security wanted the guy kicked out and told him to leave, he refused, and the cops were called.
The guy said he was not going to leave and would either kill a cop or watch the game because he wasn’t leaving, he also started calling the black cop the N-word.
After refusing multiple requests from the cops to leave, one cop went to handcuff the guy who started to fight, after getting tazered twice the guy continued to fight and tried to grab the cop’s gun.
He got beaten and ultimately taken into custody.
The second incident was similar, 3 guys were arrested, they had been warned multiple times by stadium security to calm down or the would be ejected, they were all drunk and continued their actions, the cops were then called.
After refusing multiple requests to leave a cop attempted to pull one guy out of the crowd, he started to fight and tried to put the cop in a headlock, he then started to get beaten, this guy’s brother then put another cop in a bear hug and he got beaten, the third guy tried to join in and got arrested as well.
I am watching the video now.
Drunk fans are being stupid and cops trying to restore order. The police may have used better tactics but did what they did.
He said he was going to either kill a cop or not leave. He then threatened to beat their asses, dropped the N word repeatedly and took a fighting stance. The cops has a choice… way away and leave the idiot who shoved the stadium employee and said he would kill one of them before he left… or go hands on. When they tried to arrest him he fought back and tried to grab one cops pistol from the holster.
And all of this was happening at the top of the bleachers. Close enough to worry that if he got a good grab, he could have shoved an officer right on over, to certain death.
The cops were in the right.
“ The police may have used better tactics but did what they did.”
Such as?
The cops were in the right.
I agree in both cases.
I just can’t imagine what else they could do. Drunk aggressive guys, in the middle of a crowd. Stadium wants them gone. They just tell the cops no. You can’t have cops just shrug and leave.
It blows my mind that about 500 drunk idiots were ejected from the game.
WTH?
Being drunk and stupid, they will be held responsible.
I think the first guy was actually dangerous and was prepared to kill a cop. And he had a couple of ways to do it. The others were just normal drunk jackasses. I’m betting that first guy has a respectable criminal record.
I agree. I am still watching the video.
Thanks for the summary !
Then I have no problem with the cops did.
In the end the cops were cleared of improper use of force.
Of course they were...
Did you watch the video ??
If you watched, do you agree with the cops being cleared or is your response in general about cops investigating other cops and covering up for them.
However I deleted the rest of my comment as the perp also did grab for his gun, which in my opinion ruined his otherwise valid claim of police brutality. The cop struck him in the face with his cuffs first, did that cause him to reach for the gun? I don’t know.
That picture you posted of the handcuffs, IMO does not show the cop using them as brass knuckles, if you watched the video this was explained and said this was SOP, perhaps this is a lie but sounds reasonable to me.
The old man getting the beat down was not some violent threat[ insolent,,,mouthy all of that, maybe]...did you watch that? I wanted to reach thru the screen and beat that fat sob myself.
No I do not agree with the cops being cleared.
[Aside: we watch many “arrest” videos and are generally amazed by the restraint shown..even to the point of wanting the cops to do more. These scenes looked to be more like riot than enforcement. Just my never to be humble opine.]
The old guy tried to get the cop in a head lock, his brother put the other cop in a bear hug.
Remember the old guy refused multiple requests to leave, at that point, what are cops supposed to do, leave and hope they calm down or forcibly remove them.
You touch a cop in that situation, you are going to get your ass beat.
Jacksonville is not some blue city trying to defund the police, you refuse lawful orders and touch cops in an aggressive manner you will get beaten in a NY second.
This is a video clip of the incident from a citizen,
notice the police video is incomplete and doesn’t even come close to showing the number of brass knuckle type strikes.
