Fernando Valenzuela, the impetus behind "Fernandomania" while winning National League Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year honors in 1981 as the Los Angeles Dodgers captured the world championship, has died at the age of 63, the Dodgers announced Tuesday night.
After pitching in the majors for 17 seasons, Valenzuela served as a Spanish-language broadcaster for the Dodgers since 2003. The team retired his No. 34 jersey in August 2023.

On September 24, he stepped down from the booth to “focus on his health.”
On October 1, he was admitted to the hospital with an “unspecified illness.”
Three weeks later he died.

Damn. I still remember that year. The A’s under Billy Martin were the big story in the Bay Area that summer (along with the damned strike), but Fernando-mania was unavoidable that year. RIP.
To: chrisinoc
63 these days is young.
Eventually, the information on cause of death will come out.

There have always been rumors that he lied about his age when he came up. Still young.

Vin Scully said Fernando was the oldest looking teenager he’d ever seen when Fernando made his Dodger debut in late 1980 season.
To: cherry
Yes. When he broke into the league he looked a LOT older than claimed.
Suspected at the time he was playing under an assumed identity for personal reasons.

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either opinion, or satire, or both.)

Used to get a big kick out of him at bat. If he got to base, he would get winded running to the next base.
