What You Need to Know: The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force's helicopter destroyer JS Kaga (DDH-184) arrived in San Diego shrouded in dense fog, marking the start of F-35B Lightning II training operations with the U.S. Navy.
The vessel will undergo assessments to optimize operations of the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) fifth-generation fighter, with tests running until November 18, 2024. This is Kaga's first deployment since modifications to operate F-35Bs, including a redesigned bow akin to U.S. amphibious assault ships.
Despite not officially labeling it an aircraft carrier due to pacifist constitutional policies, Japan's upgraded Kaga enhances its air capabilities in the contested East China Sea, drawing criticism from Beijing.

See? No jets visible. So what are the commies crying about?
Wow. We sank the Kaga in ‘42. We’re training the Kaga in ‘24.
It’s offensive to suggest that it’s an aircraft carrier. It’s simply a ship that carries aircraft.
Unlike our Navy, it’s unlikely they’ll run it aground or crash it into another ship.
Commies know what a grave mistake pissing off the Japanese would be.
This ship just spooks them. The idea of a new Kido Butai is not comforting.
Doesn’t look at all like an aircraft carrier.
I’m glad someone else noticed this. I was thinking that we’d already dealt with the Kaga once….Kaga 1.0 was actually located only about 5 yrs ago, about 3 miles below the surface of the Pacific.
Commies doing what commies do. 😂
“Doesn’t look at all like an aircraft carrier.”
As a former aircraft crewman it looks like one to me.
Nothing.
Maybe that will be the famous last words of Admiral Yu Dum Duk of the Commie Ship We Sink Now.
That’s because the Japanese navy isn’t ruined by wokism and DEI.
Can’t our “littoral” combat ships launch and land F35s? And don’t they usually have below deck capacities with elevators to move resources to active perches above deck at will?
or am I thinking of LHA’s and LHD’s?
I think it looks like an LHA or LHD not yet fully outfitted for air assault and support...
The F35A is a conventual fighter jet that needs a runway.
The F35B is the short take off/vertical landing version
The F35C is a conventual carrier aircraft in that it needs a catapult to get airborne.
It appears that the F35B can land on an LHA or LHD.
LOL. I copied and pasted. The article uses the word conventual. I don’t think it means what they think it means.
of course the 35B’s are really not fighters... with a limit of 1.6 mach (yes I know, that is fast enough for a LOT of mayhem). now if they were equipped with stand off air to air and electronic gizmo’s ... you are pretty much dead even if you were flying a late model... Chinese POE... piece of equipment... right?
China needs to experience deterrence... before they get so cocky with their neighbors. And if Japan could collaborate with a few of them... maybe the Chinese could eventually throw off the yoke that burdens them... WITHOUT us doing all the heavy lifting.
my opinion. an LHA or D IS an aircraft carrier but not the city sized versions we are used to seeing... like a portable air compressor in my truck.. it may be small, but it can still blow up your tires when needed.
“I think it looks like an LHA or LHD not yet fully outfitted for air assault and support...”
It was modified to handle F-35’s as a light carrier.
