He was completely inept, but LBJ was worse

Carter mishandled the situation in Iran, but the mistakes that led to that were made long before he was president.

I would take Carter years over the mess we have now any day of the week. At least we had good music and fun TV shows.

Remember, this is the bastard who pardoned all of the Viet Nam draft dodgers.

Well to be sure. Yet I think by saying that you are trying to take blame away from the Carter Administration where it belongs more than any one other culprit.

Here is a good piece from the Brookings Institute published around the 40 year anniversary of the disaster that changed our most powerful ally in the mid-east to our #1 enemy and worlds first official theocracy government (in modern history Imean ).

https://www.brookings.edu/articles/1979-iran-and-america/

In summary it lays the primary blame on Carters administration for being unimaginative and short sighted, not recognizing and acting on the developing situation.

I don’t dispute that Carter mishandled the situation, but the blame goes back to 1953, when we instigated a coup against their legally elected government and put the Shah back in power. Why? Because the new government wanted to nationalize the oil fields, but we wanted their cheap oil.

Yeah, but there’s some pretty important context to that, namely the Cold War. We were maneuvering against the Soviets and didn’t want them to have Iran, with all its energy, as a client state.

That was the same argument that got us into Vietnam. Neither worked out well for us.

It was actually the British who wanted to keep their influence in Iran, and they didn't want to negotiate with the new government. If there was instability, that was a major cause for it, and the US got involved supposedly for that reason.

Everyone could have tried working with the new government, but chose to keep their influence and the cheap oil instead.
