Iran Chamber of Commerce revealed that 12 million liters of fuel are smuggled daily from Iran to neighboring countries. But is this massive smuggling really done by border fuel carriers, or is there more to the story? Many border residents, especially from the Baloch ethnic minority in southeastern Iran, turn to fuel smuggling due to poverty and unemployment. Some of these fuel carriers don’t even have vehicles and carry fuel canisters on their backs. The Washington Post reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards are at the center of this large-scale fuel smuggling operation. Hashem Oraei, President of the Energy Scientific Associations Union, stated in March 2023 that 400 billion tomans worth of gasoline is smuggled daily, meaning 1,000 tanker trucks are on the move each day. This volume cannot be reduced to just a few small tankers.
