It’s my understanding that once you have 20 years in, a soldier can put in for retirement at any time regardless of how many years left on the current enlistment.

I was a Finance Clerk (73-C30) in the Active Army. After active duty I went straight into the National Guard, first as a 19-D cav scout, and then after 10 years into the Air Guard as power production 3EO52. I voluntarily went on a 4 month deployment to Kuwait and while I was in Kuwait I got my 20 year letter. I immediately filed for retirement. Once I had finished the deployment, I started the process of retirement which took about 4 months.

I still had 2 years left on that enlistment, but once you get the 20 year letter, you can retire. Your Commander has the option to deny your retirement request in the case of upcoming deployments as in Walz' case. My guess they wanted a shit bird gone, so allowed his request to go through. Even though I'm not drawing my pension yet (you draw Guard pensions starting age 60) I am considered "retired" and both my Wife and I have US Air Force Retired ID cards. Hers is a dependent ID of course.

It is my understanding that Walz put in for retirement before the unit was notified that they were going to be deployed.

Is it not possible that someone of his rank knew well in advance of the pending deployment before the unit was notified?
