He cannot “serve” as a Sgt. Major if he hasn’t achieved the rank of Sgt. Major.

I believe he did, but got busted down in rank when he quit.

My understanding is he was jumping through all the hoops required in an attempt to achieve the rank of Sgt Major so that he could retire with said rank but failed to do so.

If he would have stuck around long enough to complete all the requirements, he would likely have been deployed to Iraq in the mean time so he just retired (quit).

I read that somewhere but I can’t locate the article now.

He didn’t complete the required training to obtain
tbe rank.
I say, have him suit up in his dress greens. His
ribbons will tell the story. I double dog dare this
coward to pin that Combat Action Badge to his uniform.
