I also think he is buying time to figure out when to pardon Hunter and brother Jim for the upcoming tax fraud trial that may implicate him and also pardon Hunter’s gun conviction. He is probably getting a list from Garland as to what the family is being investigated for so he doesn’t miss pardoning anything on the potential indictment menu over there. He’s not leaving until he issues those pardons
If he remains in office, i.e., doesn't resign or get removed by the 25th Amendment, he can still witdrawl from the 2024 race and issue those pardons after election day.

I agree but I think Hunter’s tax fraud trial is scheduled for September before the election and he would want to pardon him BEFORE the trial so there is no trial where info would come out implicating him and other family members. He will term the prosecution as a political witch hunt as his reason for pardoning.
