This is a reasonable gambit. Harris has worse numbers than Biden. And if Democrats don’t coalesce around her, the possibility is of a mad scramble for the nomination, a circular firing squad. Trump is a pretty weak candidate in the sense that while better than Biden’s, his approval numbers are terrible, under 50%. The only reason they did not challenge Biden was that it’s pretty hard to beat an incumbent president in the primaries. With Biden gone, and Harris a nonentity, the odds of a hugely damaging primary battle go through the roof.
