WOW! So beautiful! I heard her perform that earlier, when she first did someone said that Simon couldn’t stand that song, but when he first heard her sing it, he was totally taken aback. This rendition is even more beautiful than when I first heard her sing it. I wish her all the best, I hope she goes on to great success, even more so than Susan Boyle.
I like iz’s version better
The last half of the video was the hosts gushing over the singer. There’s some good talent on the show but I can’t stand the hosts.
Love that she announced that she still works at the gym handing out towels and making shakes. I don’t think she will be doing that much longer. Praying she does a Gospel CD - she can easily tour with Carrie Underwood if she wanted to.
Indeed
That’s nice but Judy did it best.
Got some pipes. Don’t care for that style though.
Didn’t ;ike it at all. Completely overdone and without any kind of real professional touch. Just a bunch of grossly amplified hollering, not anything that would give one sweet dreams. Yuck!
Thank you for posting. I saw her first vid and was blown away. Simon sums it up very well at the end. Can’t wait to hear singing in heaven.
OFFICIAL Somewhere over the Rainbow - Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole
The flow of the melodized lyrics carries its performer, not vice versa.
(In this case, the overwhelming impact of intense flashing lights, bombshell volume, and inept meter destroyed the ability to hear its words that are gently sewn together by the melody to clothe and bear a wounded tender heart to its healing destination. The performance smashes the theme to pieces. The intent of the song poem is lost.)
A kind of murder of a melodious dream-song would happen if the same acoustics, lighting, and pacing were applied to the narrative of:
"Row, row, row your boatYou see?Gently down the stream;Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily --Life is but a dream."
Unfortunately, your "Iz" achieves a similar effect, losing the story. A good raconteur directs the hearer's attentio to the aim and theme of the tale, not meddling with it, remaining in the fabric of the background. Trying to put a beat into the flow of "Over the rainbow," emphasizing the rhythm spoils the effect the composer/arranger desired for his artistry.
Sory, my FRiend, no desire to offend, only instruct.
Actually she is a Professional singer - many are objecting to her win for that reason.
I believe she works the front desk of a gym handing out towels and making protein shakes.
It will be interesting to see if she resigns that position to go on tour
Thanks for posting that. I think Richard has the potential to win if he can overcome the nerves and get the stage presence required for entertainment industry. I think Richard and Sydnie Christmas should tour together ! I think it would sell out all over the world.
Would love to see both of them do some Gospel / praise and worship - their vocals and stories would resonate with the contemporary Christian audience
I love that version. When we moved out of HI I brought several CDs of local music, and listen to this often when I want to reminisce.
