Instead of religion, though, the current pair of candidates are claimed to be extreme idealists by their opponents and mouthpieces. Both sides of the political aisle are claiming that "the other side" will destroy "Democracy" if elected, and lament that elections will be a thing of the past. (In the case of the Klanspeople, elections are already tainted by the corruption by partisan election workers.)
The soap box isn't working very well. The election box has a huge thumb on its scales. That leaves one box left. How soon will the peace be shattered?

Maybe because it is missing your voice in the public square?
There is no magic bullet, no perfection this side of heaven. Why is that? Because man is inherently evil, not good.
Many, including me, can spout off in great detail the things we don’t want. But if asked what yoiu want, there is silence.
If I shake you awake in the middle of the night and ask what you are fighting for, after you reach for your gun, what do you tell me?
Our Founding Fathers could and did answer that question. Maybe we should reflect on their answer.
>> how close we are to having no sane choice for President
Huh? How is having a HIGHLY sane choice (President Trump) and an utterly INSANE choice (Jao Beidan) in any way “close to having no sane choice”...?
Your last paragraph is food for thought. The rest of your screed is nonsense. Quoting science fiction to support your position is a lousy debating tactic.
Just my 2c. And here’s another 2c: “independents” are overrated. The world is faced with bright line choice going forward; fickle unprincipled “independent” wafflers need not apply.
No sane choice for President?
What are you talking about?
