Apparently the problem arises when someone needs that paycheck to continue, or that power to continue.
That goes back to ancient times. The Athenian demagogues, Roman Consuls and Senators, Medieval bureaucrats, etc. It’s as old as civilization. The founders’ genius was in finding a way to harness ambition and pride and pit the ambitious, prideful men against each other with checks and balances. Mere democracy is an ugly, dangerous business. A fully matured Republic, however, is a glorious thing, if you can keep it.
