I remember Comet Kohoutek. What a letdown that was. I was 11 years old and in sixth grade. Dubbed "The Christmas Comet", it was to outstrip the brightness of even Comet Hailey from earlier that century.I saw Comet Kohoutek pretty clearly without a telescope or binoculars in the early dawn sky in 1973. I was 23 at the time and was in Death Valley with non-polluted clear skies.

Nice! That seems like much better spot to see a comet.
I was dealing with the city lights of Boston in those days.
