Matisyahu Gelman was a secularized, assimilated Austrian school boy. One day, one of his classmates called him a “dirty Jew” and spat on him. After the fist fight, he left the school, met a Jewish holy man in the Jude gas of Vienna, poured his heart out to him, and became a fervent follower of the Gur Rebbe, leading a group of youths who resisted all of the Nazi decrees when they came. They refused to register for work detail, refused to wear the yellow stars, refused to show up voluntarily for deportation to concentration camps, and led rebellions when they ended up there.
