Both of the countries involved in the conflict have a religion preferred by the state which they advance at the expense of others.

Actually Ukraine which is largely a church going nation is being invaded and is restricting the Russian branch of their church that is aiding the invaders.
Russia’s branch of Orthodox are largely a part of the government, a ceremonial front of a government church that Russians don’t actually attend.
