But this “pope” has sided with Russia. Is anyone really surprised by this?

One of the requirements that must be met for a war to be considered "just" is that one has to have a reasonable chance of victory before engaging in (or continuing) hostilities.

Whatever this pope may have said on any other issue, a call for a cessation of hostilities on his part should not be reflexively read to mean support for Putin (even as his interests may coincide here with Putin's).

Yeah, and normally.... or in a sane and normal world... that would be a cogent argument for what you’re saying. However... with “this” pope... I’m not convinced that his interests coincide with a call for peace.
