In the heart of Oakland, where rising crime rates are turning the city into a battleground, there’s a curious twist in the tale. While law enforcement struggles to keep up with surging robberies, burglaries, and motor vehicle theft, Oakland is channeling resources into an unexpected venture – recycling inspectors.
In a recent initiative, Oakland workers hit the streets to inspect trash cans, ensuring residents adhere to the meticulous sorting required by SB 1383, California’s short-lived climate pollution reduction act. The law mandates three-streamed sorting for trash, compost, and recycling. Rebecca Parnes, a senior recycling specialist with the City of Oakland, emphasized the importance of correct sorting as part of the city’s climate change fight.

Classic anarcho-tyranny.
Back in the mid 70’s I wrote a short story for a college class. The story was about two inmates sharing a prison cell. Their crime was failure to recycle. Maybe the folks in Oakland read my story and got ideas.
Some cities were so far in arrears that each garbage truck driver had to bring a check with them to the dump or the dump would refuse the load.
A city could go maybe a week before the garbage piles up to the point of health problems as well as physically blocking streets and sidewalks. They also know that the garbage is most likely to end up in the city parks, playgrounds, and schoolyards.

Sheeeeshe!
It all ends up in the same landfill.

Spending OPM..and in greater quantities ..is always the government “solution”.
My daughter in Sydney, NSW, has at least four and maybe five trash cans, each a different color, and each required for a different sorted class of waste. I cannot remember what all the classes are, but one red can is for kitchen scraps and garbage which must be compressed into small blocks, since garbage disposals, like our Insinkerators, are outlawed there. Every class of waste has its own collection schedule, some on two-week cycles. The whole system literally stinks.
Fighting crime is racist.
Saving the planet is paramount.

I flew in and out of Oakland last month. I have never seen so much grafiti and tagging anywhere. It is like every building is marked up with gang tags.
How do you recycle an inspector?
City spends money on recycling inspectors.
Money laundering somebody always get rich on such deals.
It’s California Jake
Did you get your idea from ALICE’S RESTAURANT? when Arlo Guthrie is in jail for “Littering. (Aw) and creating a disturbance. (Yeah!)
I served on the Board for a solid waste organization. I learned that one of the first steps in a recycling process was to combine and mix the materials. Because if one particular class of recyclable (plastic, paper, metal)were sent through alone it would be detrimental to the sorting machines. They actually worked better and more efficiently if presented with a combination of materials.
The public sorts at home, and the government combines it in the warehouse.
The Oakland policy seems to be more about power than practicality.
This reminds one of those cargo cultists. The city officials are ignorant of how things really work. But they know “recycling” is something that progressive cities used to do when things still operated normally. So they put their time and tax money into “recycling” so things will work again.
You take a city dog-catcher and move them up the ladder to inspector.
Will they be armed? Better be.
