Not surprising at all. I taught at a university for 32 years. When I retired, more than half of incoming freshman had to take remedial math courses. Only 55% of freshman returned for a second year. The university then did more recruiting in urban areas to try to boost enrollment. That kind of recruiting doesn’t exactly raise the collective IQ of the student body. On top of that, smarter kids are starting to question the value of a grossly overpriced “college experience.”

When I was younger the idea was that people with higher IQ’s should go to college, and college was intellectually challenging. Now neither is true. The smartest group of people I have ever associated with was in the Army Signal Corps, and that was only because when people with hard science educations were drafted, they didn’t get assigned as infantry or cooks, but were in technical jobs or MI. The Signal Corps seemed to have a lot of engineers. Best argument for conscription.

Yep, the smart kids are figuring out that becoming an electrician, plumber, landscaper can mean owning your own company and living in a million dollar plus home and having lots of employees and a great life.

A degree in African studies or DEI means if you are lucky you might get a job and that career is now on the way out.

Maybe because recruiting all those urban kids is degrading the college experience? Who wants to pay top dollar to live in a dorm that resembles an inner city housing project?

One interesting tidbit. My alma mater has, for maybe the last decade, has featured black or brown students on their advertising and website. You did see some white women (usually alongside black men), but hardly every any white men. And no blonds. If there was a white man in a picture, he was barely visible at the back of the group. Or “he” was obviously trans.

Well, this year, things changed a lot. On the website, there is a picture of a BLOND white male student talking to a white female student. No others in the picture. I could not believe it. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Of course, it could have SOMETHING to do with plummeting enrollment and revenue. It seems that WHATEVER they were doing was not working. Imagine that?
