You are indulging in yet another modernist trait, that of diagnosing “disorders”. If these are disorders, then Asia, one big chunk of humanity, is riddled with them. So was Europe, up to, perhaps, the French Revolution.
No, I think what we have here is a latter-day problem with US, and generally Western culture. This is yet another old derivative of 19th-century Romanticism, for instance the theme of the favorite literary form, the “bildungsroman”.
This is NOT a conservative position, or belief. But it is so engrained in this culture that even people who imagine that they are conservative swallow it whole.
