New York City is looking to expand its effort to punish drivers by fining them up to $2,500 for having loud cars or excessive honking.
The city has seven noise cameras, at the price tag of $35,000 each, and plans to install more by the end of the year — at least five per borough.
The noise cameras are activated by a sound louder than 85 decibels, and ticket fines range between $800 and $2,500.

When do the fines for breathing become law?
Cars honking in NYC?
“When do the fines for breathing become law?”
I thought the same, but they’re “noise cameras”, not “nose cameras”.
In any case, I suspect a judge will prohibit them as they discriminate against Hispanics.
I was brought up in NYC and I can tell you that honking horns are part of the city’s tradition. You can’t come to a big city and expect not to hear car horns. You can’t do anything anymore, the city has become a joke, and is now overrun with illegals. Very sad!
Are these the same devices that detect gunshots?
Did you see that video of Gaza before Hamas attacked Israel?
They have no stoplights or signs. People were driving all willy nilly and honked their horns which was non stop.
It was crazy. With that many honking, the use of the horn means nothing.
Nothing but noise.
I actually like this. Especially when trucks are Jake breaking in front of my office.
They call those taxes.
Try to avoid all taxes while breathing. You can’t.
Next they will fine you for talking loud.

Life imitating art. In the Robin William’s POPEYE there was a tax collector that taxed almost every activity. This is the goal of Democrats.
Jake brakes are protected by Federal law. Many local jurisdictions ignore this, but if anyone wants to push it, the local jurisdiction will lose.
In any case, I suspect a judge will prohibit them as they discriminate against Hispanics.

Love this. Dry humor is best.
So, my ‘69 Roadrunner with glasspacks would have gotten dinged for sure. What little noise reduction they offered started to disappear after a couple of weeks when they began to burn out. It was pretty close to running straight pipes.
But the sound was glorious. Throw in ‘Get Yer Ya-Yas Out’ blasting from the 8-track (or Creedence, or Hendrix), and I was in heaven.
“Love this. Dry humor is best.”
Thanks, but is it humor. I remember something like blacks complaining that they’re disproportionately pulled over for having windows with overly-dark tinting.
Well, if the police cannot see who’s driving, how can they identify blacks to single them out?
Burn down a building; not a problem, honk your horn and 90 days in the cooler if you cannot pay the fine.
I wonder what happens when some kid with an air horn starts to target nasty white people?
Brake: a device used to slow a mechanical object like an automobile. Also a device used to bend sheet metal.
Break: damage
