Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine
ORYX ^ | Since February 24, 2022 and daily | ORYX

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

Peak China

“Gold Bars and Tokyo Apartments: How Money Is Flowing Out of China.”

“Affluent Chinese have moved hundreds of billions of dollars out of the country this year, seizing on the end of Covid precautions that had almost completely sealed China’s borders for nearly three years.

They are using their savings to buy overseas apartments, stocks and insurance policies. Able to fly again to Tokyo, London and New York, Chinese travelers have bought apartments in Japan and poured money into accounts in the United States or Europe that pay higher interest than in China, where rates are low and falling.

The outbound shift of money in part indicates unease inside China about the sputtering recovery after the pandemic as well as deeper problems, like an alarming slowdown in real estate, the main storehouse of wealth for families. For some people, it is also a reaction to fears about the direction of the economy under China’s leader, Xi Jinping, who has cracked down on business and strengthened the government’s hand in many aspects of society.

In some cases, Chinese are improvising to get around China’s strict government controls on transferring money overseas. They have bought gold bars small enough to be scattered unobtrusively through carry-on luggage, as well as large stacks of foreign currency.”

The nuttery continues:

Our army, it seems, will have to violate Vladimir Putin’s order regarding Avdiivka

We wrote that the President demanded to take the city by December 1.

It seems that Vladimir Vladimirovich’s order will not be carried out.

“I think we’ll take Avdiivka. But by December 1 it will be very difficult to do this. I hope Vladimir Vladimirovich understands this,” the military man, who is now in the Avdiivka direction of the front, told us.

Another complained about the rush in the assaults, which is causing a serious increase in the number of dead and wounded fighters.

“We are in a hurry to take Avdiivka. We’re in too much of a hurry. And then some new cluster shells were delivered to the enemy.

“They are killing our soldiers by the dozens. We ask you to take care of people,” an officer who is taking part in the assault on the city addressed the command through us.

The General Staff commented on these requests to us with restraint.

“We will take Avdiivka, I don’t see any point in talking about dates. At the same time, there is no rush or increase in losses near Avdiivka. The losses are serious, but they cannot be called critical, we have statistics,” notes one of the generals.

He also refused to say whether Putin might fire any military commanders if Avdiivka is not taken by December 1.

Putin wants a big victory next year. It’s not just about Ukraine

According to two of our sources in the Kremlin, the President gave the SVR the task of studying the question of in which country “it would be possible to show the strength of Russia in general and Russian weapons in particular.”

Vladimir Putin wants his re-election next year to be accompanied by a big victory and is “ready for serious action” in the spring of 2024.

According to a high-ranking source in the Foreign Intelligence Service, “victory in the Northern Military District in Ukraine would be optimal, but there are suspicions that it will be difficult to achieve it next year, even if a large mobilization is announced.”

Therefore, the scouts began exploring other regions where we could achieve victory.

So far, the options include protecting the Russian-speaking population in the Baltic countries and taking revenge on a number of European countries.

“Our people in the Baltics are greatly oppressed (it’s hard to disagree with this fact - ed.), and we could carry out limited operations to protect Russian-speaking citizens in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

“It would also not be a bad idea to take revenge on Finland for what it is doing. Well, “calming down” Poland, Romania, and other allies of Ukraine is a good idea. We are thinking and working for now,” our interlocutor noted.

Another confirmed this information and emphasized that we are not talking about a possible military clash with NATO countries.

“But our specialists, including the military, could do some work. I consider the defense of Russians a sacred matter. That’s why, by the way, I’m telling you this information. The West should be afraid of us, that’s a fact,” the intelligence officer said.

We should note: protecting Russians is an important matter. And we do not welcome their oppression in the Baltics. But we hope that all these plans will not result in a big war.

“I am also afraid of this, which is why I decided to inform you about the intentions of the authorities, to make this information public. Russia simply cannot withstand another special operation that turns into war,” one of the sources in the Foreign Intelligence Service agrees with us.

They should really set their sights a little lower. Georgia couldn't do much about a "Special Military Operation", and they could show off their air power against a tiny country with no real air defense. Or maybe Armenia, since they just had a falling out with Russia. Lots of Russian speakers there, so it checks that box.

Azerbaijan would be quite a prize, and directly supports Putin's goals of energy dominance. But Turkey could make it quite complicated, and possibly trigger a conflict much larger than Russia wants, or is capable of sustaining.

If Russia had easily defeated Ukraine as they had hoped, Moldova and Georgia would already have been taken, and quite possibly Azerbaijan. Europe would be completely dependent on Russia and NATO might well have been rendered obsolete. Alas, that's not how history unfolded. Finland or the Baltics are fantasy, a casualty of misadventure.

Maybe they should try to take Liechtenstein. Population 39,000.

BUT, that may be too difficult for them.

Putin can’t afford to anger Erdogan (Turks are emotional people). Erdogan is one of his biggest smuggling partners, keeping the Russian economy above water.

Turkey could close the straits to all Russian commerce (major oil and grain export route), and give Ukraine the ability to blow the Kerch bridge for good (and ravage the Black Sea Fleet further), without even entering direct conflict. Turkey could open floodgates of Military support to Ukraine (they have one of the top ten defense industries), and maybe even get Europe to pay for some of it.

Wrath of God kind of weather last weekend.

Newsweek reports:
30-Foot Waves Pounding Russia-Occupied Peninsula

“Hurricane-force winds and 30-foot waves pounded annexed Crimea in a major Black Sea storm on Sunday that left one man dead, several others injured and half a million people without power...

...The stormy weather was expected to continue on Monday...

...Telegram channel ASTRA reported that the bad weather is also expected to hit other regions in Russia, and that in the Krasnodar Territory, “the wind is already tearing roofs off buildings...

...Many villages in the annexed Black Sea peninsula are now without power, multiple trees have been knocked down, roofs have been torn off, and gas pipelines are damaged, and Monday has been declared a non-working day due to the weather, Russian state-run media reported Monday...

...Kryuchkov said in a post on his Telegram channel that the worst-affected areas are Chornomorsk, Saky, Bilohirsk, Simferopol, Zhovtneve, Bakhchysarai and Lenine.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian coastal defense lines had been destroyed during the storm.

“A storm washed away trenches in occupied Crimea that [the] Russian army dug out on the beaches,” Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian minister of internal affairs, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “According to information from Crimean media, in Yevpatoria, the water washed away the defense line on the coast, engineering buildings, and firing positions.””

Here is a tweet referenced in that Newsweek article:

@albafella1
“Nature took away the entire line of defense on the coast of Crimea from the russian invaders.
It is reported that there is now the most powerful storm in the last 100 years.

Wind speed off the coast of Crimea is from 115 to 130 km/h, in the Crimean mountains - up to 150 km/h.

And the storm is heading towards russia, Moscow.”

Right behind Hurricane Bettina, come tornadoes in the forecast for today (Tuesday) in the Black Sea area. Blizzard conditions occurred from the Balkans into Russia, including Moscow City.

AP reports:

“The Institute for the Study of War... reported that the storm forced Russia to return all of its naval vessels and missile carriers to their bases, and suggested that the threat of mines drifting in the Black Sea will increase because the storm has dispersed minefields.

There were also reports that the storm damaged railways in coastal areas which could have an impact on the Russian military’s logistics capabilities in occupied Crimea and southern Ukraine, the ISW said.

Winds of 108 kph (67 mph) were forecast for Tuesday in Crimea, southern Russia and parts of northwestern Russia, the state news agency Tass reported.

In the Vologda region, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) northeast of Moscow, more than 10 days worth of snow — about 25 centimeters (almost 10 inches) — fell in one day, Tass said, citing the mayor of a small town who said road clearing took twice as long as usual.

The storm also caused the Moscow region to be blanketed with snow Monday, piling drifts up to 25 centimeters (almost 10 inches) deep, three times heavier than normal, the Tass news agency said.”

Russia’s Powerful Invisible Defenses Around Sevastopol Rendered Visible (EW blocking GPS and C Band SAR satellite imagery)

https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2023/11/russias-powerful-invisible-defenses-around-sevastopol-rendered-visible/

"A new analysis of open source data gives a rare window into this world, unmasking Russia's hidden hand...

...It leverages two effects; firstly the navigation errors in the reported position of civilian vessels in Sevastopol. And secondly, the effect on radar satellite imagery. Open source intelligence analyst Damien Symons has noted these effects in the past month. Both indicate that there is a powerful jammer located in Sevastopol (possibly at the airport)...

...Since early November a number of ships and boats, which are in Sevastopol harbor, have been transmitting their location as Sevastopol International Airport. This is about 8 km (5 miles) north of their true location. The vessels are transmitting their position via AIS (automated identification system). It is possible for vessels to report their position incorrectly on purpose, or due to a myriad of technical issues. But this is systematic suggesting something else is at play.

So many vessels misreporting their location, and the false positions having such a concentration, points towards GPS interference. Jamming global positioning system signals, such as the American GPS, Russian GLONASS, or European Galileo (all referred to here generically as ‘GPS’), can affect AIS. The AIS transmission includes the coordinates of the vessel which in many cases this is fed directly from the GPS system. Without further analysis it is unclear whether the jamming is affecting all types of GPS or just one...

...Jamming is also visible with the European Space Agency’s Sentinel 1 SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellite. There was interference in imagery taken at 6:49am local time on November 23rd. It was even more marked at 6:36pm the next day, effectively obstructing the whole city. It is not possible to make out the ships in the harbor in the way it normally is.

Satim, a company which specializes in analyzing radar imagery, confirmed that SAR satellites operating at different frequencies did not appear to be affected. Sentinel 1 is a C-band radar while others are X-band. It is possible that the jamming was active when the Sentinel 1 satellite passed but not when the others did. Another straightforward interpretation is that the jamming is targeting C-band rather than X-band radars.

In both the AIS issues and the radar satellite interference, these may not be the primary target. The AIS errors can be seen as merely a side effect of the GPS jamming. Disruption to the satellites however does have some military value. Ukraine no doubt uses then as one of many means to observe Russian port activity and plan strikes. But again there may be other C band radars Russia is targeting, and the satellite interference may be secondary."

In the last week, the NATO Secretary General said that all members agree on Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

Work on Ukraine’s accession into NATO continues, with Ukraine being given a fast track (because Putin).

Ukrainska Pravda reports:

“On Wednesday, 29 November, NATO and Ukraine are expected to sign a list of the reforms that Kyiv has to implement for its future NATO accession.

Euractiv says this step should push Kyiv to reform its armed forces and other security sectors, and to provide a checklist that NATO members will be able to track. The document will not be made public.

The four NATO diplomats said the process of implementing the annual programme of conditions is less stringent than the NATO Membership Action Plan that candidates had to adhere to in the past.

Compared to previous reform plans, Ukraine’s annual plan is a lot shorter and less detailed – 10 pages rather than 300, listing areas of priorities rather than a checklist, which made it very difficult for Ukraine to demonstrate its successes, one person familiar with the discussions said.

So it will be easier for Ukraine to demonstrate its achievements before NATO’s Washington summit next summer.

The many reforms include guaranteeing civil control of the armed forces, drafting a national defence and security strategy, working on the interoperability of the armed forces with those of NATO members, and anti-corruption reforms (changes to the judiciary, asset declaration for politically exposed persons).

According to Euractiv, the protection of national minorities is also included in the reform plan alongside human rights and democracy considerations.”

Merry Christmas Sweden and NATO!

Reuters reports:

“Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told NATO counterparts on Tuesday he was working hard on Sweden’s NATO ratification which is currently being debated by the Turkish parliament and provided a likely timeline of before year-end for the Nordic country to formally join the alliance, a senior State Department official said.”
