One problem with teacher flight is that many teachers went into teaching not because it was their calling, but because it was an easy degree. So many young adults were told to go into college first and pick a career while in college. Thus while in college they choose for the easy way to "finish" --- with an Education major being a lot easier than majoring in engineering or computer science.

When there's no vision the people perish. I try to encourage high schoolers to pick a career before going to college and, after having picked the career, talk to people already in that career to ask them what training or college is good for that industry.

Thus while in college they choose for the easy way to "finish" --- with an Education major being a lot easier than majoring in engineering or computer science.

Those latter degrees require the ability to self-educate and are much more readily completed with the help of good mentors. Today's government schools prepare K-12 students to be education majors - at best - which is why we end up with so may of them.

When we were in our upper 20s, one of my friends who already had 3 successful businesses and now has more, said, "someday when I grow up, maybe I'll decide what I want to be".

It still applies to both of us, I have been reasonably successful at many different jobs and a business, and we are almost 70 now.

I got them right out of high school and homeschooling. The difference in maturity was noticeable. If you’re worth a flip as a teacher, you realize rather quickly their weaknesses and strengths. I have sent many down the path of success when the opportunity arose. After 20+ years, I’ve got a lot of stories.
