Would like to hear the input from your friend. I lived in Germany from 77-81, loved it. My daily commute took me through the Urziger Wurzgarten vineyards, and I lived in Traben-Trarbach for 4 years.

Saw an old Army buddy on vacation in July, we were stationed at the same battery at Hahn AB. I was best man at his wedding. During our visit, I heard her speak English for the first time. Nearly all of our conversations were In German my last two years there.

I thoroughly enjoyed my German tours; I was stationed in Ansbach for a year after Vietnam and then later on did 3 years in Bamberg and 1 1/2 years in Butzbach.

I got to be conversationally fluent in German and even though most young Germans spoke English, they were happy to hear an American speak their language.
