A recording was found, from 1966, of President Lyndon Johnson speaking to Senator Eugene McCarthy on the death of Diem some three years earlier: “[We] killed him. We all got together and got a gaddamn bunch of thugs and we went in and assassinated him. Now we’ve really had no political stability since then.”
