Halloween shrines to the totem figures of decay and death, as in some depraved cargo cult competition aimed at hastening our country’s descent into chaos...Something in the zeitgeist is prompting us to do this.

Yesterday I drove through a small town in PA and saw two separate houses with 12-ft skeletons on the front lawns. Elsewhere there was a house I passed with a coffin, an 8-ft Grim Reaper in front...and a garage with little 3-ft skeletons hanging from the windows, as if trying to storm the place. Home Depot sells horse skeletons, rotted pumpkins, life-sized zombie children. Meanwhile the Thanksgiving Day decorations are meager in comparison.

However, I wouldn't elevate the responsibility to a zeitgeist. People are simply more shallow these days, and they have an appetite for weirdness, shock and dazzle because the entertainment industry has fed them little else. GIGO.

There is no spirit left to make a spirit of the times.

The Local Loews has Halloween display, right next to the Christmas display.

Santa waves acoss the aisle to a 7 foot werewolf.

Not a turkey or a pilgrim to be seen.

I’m seeing a lot of that giant skeleton this year. Seems to be very popular. I wonder what the Chinese factory workers are thinking when they make them.

I remember when Halloween used to be just a time of fun for kids, have noticed how it has progressively turned more darker, serious, more adult-oriented. I imagine marketing to increase customer base has much to do with it, but there's signs of culture rot in the mix. Noticed too that people who gravitate towards celebrating gruesomeness and horror during Halloween are the queers. They tend to really go overboard with the macabre stuff. Definite signs that dark things are flying around inside their skulls.
