VANITY; Going the permanent RV life, need mobile internet advice
My addled mind ^ | Today | Me

Wife, son and I are doing the permanent RV life. TBH, the hardest part has been the downsizing; you never truly understand just hom much you accumulate over 30 years of marriage until you do something like this. As it stands, we are investigating mobile internet services and are seriously considering Starlink

“Verizon is they ALWAYS throttle after a certain point, eve with their unlimited plan.”

Yes. And when you’re throttled on Verizon you might as well just switch off everything until the end of that current billing cycle. They advertise unlimited, and get away with it, because technically you DO have coverage. Here’s what it cuts back to:

“Verizon Msg: Your device ... has used up its hotspot allowance. You’ll have speeds up to 600 Kbps or 3 Mbps when in 5G UWB until the next billing cycle.”

We moved from a house with Spectrum Internet to a house that has NO / ZERO Internet provider. (We were told it has Xfinity; it doesn’t.)

Half of my life for one month was spent researching options. We ended up adding to our VZ account an Orbic Speed 5G UW mobile hotspot device. It’s a work-around, and so inferior to “real” Internet. Not happy, but we were desperate.

With real Internet through Spectrum you could leave it on 24/7 and it was truly unlimited. Orbic is basically a cell phone and we have to plug in, unplug, plug in, unplug ... throughout the day. 100% battery? Unplug. 15% battery? Plug in. Rinse. Repeat.

Annoying.

For RV or other traveling it could be pretty good. As a substitute for regular Internet, it sucks.

I just tether from a second cell phone using a travel router plugged in to my solar setup. I use the “senior” plan through Tmobile. Verizon has better coverage but 95% of the places I stay is just fine. I have three cell phones. One for full time internet in the rv, another for full time internet in my office, and the one I use as an actual phone. I have cameras and a “Ring” for the office and RV. Works fine I have lived off grid in an RV going on six years now. The only thing I miss is a built in washer dryer.

I highly recommend a good solar set up. It is great just being able to pull over somewhere and boon dock for a week without worrying about electricity.

I use “easy tether” on a second cell phone tethered to a travel router. I go through 100 gigs a month running my backup servers and watching movies without any problem or throttling.

“There are two kinds of RV’s - ones that leak and ones that WILL leak.”

I’ve had 2 RVs. Both leaked. One I did not catch early and one wall was basically gone. It appeared it leaked when I bought it. The settlement in the lawsuit against the manufacturer and seller (I had taken it back after seeing some water and they declared it repaired) and then selling it I broke dead even. The second I caught early and fixed the leak. It had moderate damage. I sold it and the buyers are using it without repairing it. INSPECT THE ROOF REGULARLY AND IF YOU SEE WATER IN THE RV TAKE IT VERY SERIOUSLY!

Yeah, you’re correct.

Sometimes it makes sense for some people.

I live in Arkansas, but in Benton County. Cost of living here approaches New England costs. It’s quite different than the rest of Arkansas.

I’ve decided to build a house by myself, by hand, so that my daughter and I can live without fear of homelessness. I fought that battle for 5 years and I’m finding that I’m not giving my best to her, in giving it to employers and landlords.

The rv for me is freedom and opens our future for better things.

If I have this vehicle, I’ll never be homeless.

Starlink has to be your best option. It won’t be happy if you park under trees, though.

My husband and I travelled back and forth across the southern part of the country between 2006 and 2014 in a motorhome. We belonged to Family Motorhome Association but also consulted the Escapees website for advisement re: all things RV. I suggest that you visit a few of the sites that address your concerns for helpful hints.
