This was the second bear in less than a year which had been killing livestock in the area.

The bear was killing the man's goat. It would not flee from warning shots. When wounded, it ran off, which is the typical response.

That’s good bear spray.

The bears are migrating to southern MA sorta like the Illegal Aliens. It must be the free food and free rent

Where did a Massachusetts resident get a handgun?

There were a couple things in that article that caught my attention: “Environmental Police” and “lawfully owned firearm”.

I’m so happy we live in a deep red state in the absolute middle of nowhere.

If I want to buy a gun for cash and poke it out a window to shoot a coyote, I can do that. If I want to burn a pile of tires on Earth Day, I can do that. (but I don’t)

It's times like this that I want to remind people:

Shoot, Shovel and Shutup.

If a bear is too big, drag its carcass into the woods. The Mafia has done similar for decades.

Sadly, law enforcement is not your friend, and you risk having your weapons taken and even a jail sentence.

Still, I applaud the local police for being reasonable, but that is not always going to be the case. The trend is the opposite direction.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Only gun grabbers would not see it that way.

Sometimes I get the impression FR is a haven of firearms Luddites — but then most firearms related internet threads are mostly bluster and trolling. Glock this! Calibers start with 4! etc. etc.

Personally if I foreknew that I’d have to shoot a bear I’d leave *all* the handguns behind — pick your favorite long arm I guess but the easy default might be a 12ga slug or several.

In any case *this* guy achieved the desired result regardless of what we all think he should’ve used.
