I don’t know about Hawaii but the influence of East Indian religion on California culture is pretty advanced compared to the rest of the country.
The spiritualism and New Age cults that began springing up here in the late 1960’s were largely Americanized versions of Indian pantheism. Some of it was obvious, like the Hare Krishnas. But a lot of it isn’t obvious and just passes as generic “spiritualism”. All of it moves California away from what was once normative American culture.
Post WWII conservatism succeeded when it elected Ronald Reagan, both as CA Governor and then as US President. That was the result of an America still dominated by a WASP and Catholic people. But the 1965 immigration act radically changed who was coming to America and California shows you what happens. Culture precedes politics.
