Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s administration responded Wednesday to “flat-out wrong” claims from the Mexican government that faulted the river buoy barrier for the recent deaths of two migrants attempting to cross the border.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the first to inform the public of the deaths and linked them to a buoy barrier in the Rio Grande River that Texas installed in early July to deter illegal migrant crossings. Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesperson for Abbott, responded in a statement on Wednesday claiming that the barrier had nothing to do with the tragic deaths.
“The Mexican government is flat-out wrong,” Mahaleris said in a statement, according to the Washington Examiner. “To be clear, preliminary information points to the drowning occurring before the body was even near the barriers. The Texas Department of Public Safety [DPS] previously reported to Border Patrol the dead body floating upstream from the barriers in the Rio Grande.”
The DPS notified the Mexican government about a “lifeless body caught in the southern part of the buoys,” the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement. However, Mahaleris pointed out that they also conceded the second body was found “miles upstream from the marine barriers.”
Texas DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez said that the person found in the buoys had drowned well before reaching the barrier, and the body had been carried there by the southbound flow of the river. He cited the location of the buoys — a shallow area that is reportedly easy to walk across — as further proof that the drowning could not have occurred there. …

Two invaders breaching security measures.
Blame Mexico not Texas.
Why is Abbott playing the denial game? He should be saying, ‘Damn straight. We put it there to stop people from invading our country by swimming across the river. Attempt at your own risk. These two guys did, and it didn’t end well.’
Quit apologizing for doing the right thing. Geez.
And if it were true, so what? Do nations have a right to physically secure their borders from entry? Yes. If a country does what they have a right to do, and someone chooses to take the risk and accidentally dies, that was their choice. You can’t say the US doesn’t have the right to secure the border because some random non-US-citizen in Mexico wants illegal free entry. Well, you can SAY it, but you’re full of obvious crap if you do.
To me, it would be easy for the cartels to murder some “migrants” and dump them in the river upstream. Odds are that one would get ensnared by buoys. Then, show pictures on social media to Karens and watch the reaction.
Exactly. Sick and tired of apologies for everything under the sun especially for what’s the other person’s fault.
The river has too many easy crossing areas to walk, swim or row across. Heck, there are more than a few row boats that charge $5 to take you back and forth all day long. Or just walk across the bridge to “shop”. A few years ago, when the Donna bridge was built, the Mexican Army decided they’d drive across claiming they got lost. LOL, how in blazes do you get lost in the middle of nowhere and mistakenly cross the brand new international bridge but we patted them on the head and that was the end.
my thoughts too.
If I were governor I would tell DC that we don’t want any of your funding for anything. Here in TX we live by the US Constitution and the Texas State Constitution.
Since we are not taking your money we are also rejecting any of your rules and policies that our state supreme court decides are unconstitutional.
We will not aid or assist any Federal body attempting to apply unconstitutional force or charges against the citizens of Texas.
We will patrol and keep our own border and we will protect our sovereignty by whatever means We The People of Texas deem reasonable and necessary.
If you don’t like that, well, that’s your right, but we don’t want to hear about it.
If you have ever lived in Mexico (I have) you should know that the government never ever tells the truth.
No surprise here. Mexico has become the Southern Branch of the Democratic party.
Oh, I know. That applies to BOTH sides of the border. USA would so much better off without DC running things.
If Mexico lies about the cause, nothing wrong with setting the record straight.
