I think the epithet “Zionist” was constructed for Western ears, so that malevolent bigots could be viewed as the righteous oppressed, and the money would flow in.

It’s a case of anti-Semites and Israel haters here in the USA exhorting minorities of domestic malcontents, extremists and corrupt opportunists in Israel.
It’s the same old story of foreign enemies using domestic extremists to weaken and subvert a country that they hate.
Their opposition to needed reforms in the land of Zion is downstream of their hatred of Zion itself.
