I was in Capetown in the ‘90s. Seemed peaceful but there were signs posted in front of nearly every home with the name of a security company and the words “Armed Response.”
Today, it’s a hell hole. Attempting to bring civilization to uncivilized brutes always fails.
I took a taxi into Durban from Umlaanga Rocks in 2000.
Went down a street of cute little houses with high walls, razor wire on top, and steel driveway gates. All had the “armed response” signs.
I asked the driver, an Indian (dot not feather), about it.
“You must be used to it, just like America, huh?”

I thought I was in Los Angeles in 1987, but I may have been mistaken. One thing was sure, downtown had lots of homeless folks and was not safe looking at all.
