I was on a trip back from Winnipeg and drove through Grand Rapids before going through Duluth.

I didn't realize it at the time but Major Henry Courtney (WWII Medal of Honor winner), whom my father served with in Okinawa, was from Duluth. Courtney led the Marines' capture of the top of Sugar Loaf Hill on the evening of May 14, 1945, but was killed about midnight. My father had been talking to him a short time before but had returned to his own foxhole (I wish I had asked my father how long the interval was between when he went back to his foxhole and when Courtney was killed).

There are a couple of metal of honor winners from Duluth. Duluth has an interesting history.
