Ukraine war latest: Zelensky visits Kherson Oblast following Kakhovka dam disaster; Russia shells flooded city

President Volodymyr Zelensky met with regional authorities in Kherson Oblast on June 8 after Russia’s destruction of the Kakhovka dam caused substantial flooding in the region and elsewhere in southern Ukraine.
According to Zelensky, they discussed several key issues, including an assessment of the operational situation in Kherson Oblast, the ongoing evacuation of civilians, providing the necessary assistance to residents affected by flooding, and exploring potential plans for the region’s ecosystem restoration.
The President’s Office wrote that Zelensky also instructed officials to develop a program to compensate local businesses impacted by the flooding or relocate them within Kherson Oblast.
Six hundred square kilometers of Kherson Oblast have been flooded since Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka dam on June 6, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on June 8. Sixty eight percent of that is located in Russian-occupied territory on the east bank of the Dnipro River, while 32% of it is in the Ukrainian-controlled west bank.
Flood levels have reached over 5.5 meters and continue to rise.
Russia shells flooded city during evacuation
Russian forces shelled the Ukrainian-controlled part of Kherson Oblast on June 8 amid relief efforts. Russia deliberately attacked evacuation points.
One attack injured nine people. Among the wounded are six civilians, including a volunteer from Germany. One police officer and two employees of the State Emergency Service were also injured, according to the Interior Ministry.
Another attack targeted the Berislav district of Kherson Oblast with guided bombs, killing one woman and injuring another individual.
The Kherson Oblast Prosecutor General reported that the woman died under the rubble.
A total of 2,339 residents have been evacuated from Kherson Oblast since June 6, according to the State Emergency Service, and relief efforts are ongoing.
The Foreign Ministry announced on June 8 that the United Nations would dispatch personnel to provide assistance in the relief efforts within the Russian-occupied part of Kherson Oblast on the left bank of the Dnipro River, where an even bigger humanitarian disaster is unfolding.
UN aid workers would be provided safe passage into the occupied territories, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said. Once the same guarantee has been confirmed by the Russian side, the operation can begin. No such guarantee was given before publication.
Ukrainian officials reveal more economic, environmental consequences of Kakhovka dam breach
According to Yevhenii Ihnatenko, head of the shipping administration, Ukrainian exports downstream of the city of Zaporizhzhia through the Dnipro River will remain impossible “for a long time.”
The river is navigable only up until the Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Plant in Zaporizhzhia.
“The Russian Federation’s terrorist act will have catastrophic consequences for the whole region, and for the future restoration of shipping in particular,” Ihnatenko wrote.
The Agriculture Ministry wrote on June 7 that at least 10,000 hectares of arable land in the region would likely be flooded, severely disrupting the biodiversity of the region. The destruction of the Kakhovka dam will also complicate the water supply to 31 irrigation systems in Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
Ukraine’s agricultural industry, which has already suffered massive setbacks because of Russia’s all-out war, will now face ever bigger setbacks.
Why did they lose Bradley’s and Leopards? Because they are tanks in a place and time where tanks are twenty ton steel coffins boasting 2,000 horsepower.

On Friday, 9 June, Russian forces conducted unsuccessful offensive operations on the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka fronts; a total of 27 combat engagements occurred between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
SOURCE: General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Facebook, information as of 18:00 on 9 June
DETAILS: According to the most up-to-date information, Russian occupation forces deployed Iranian-made Shahed attack drones and Kh-101/Kh-555 air-to-surface cruise missiles to carry out an attack on military and critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine between 00:00 and 04:20 on 9 June.
Ukrainian Air Force air defence forces and systems, in cooperation with air defence units within other components of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, destroyed 4 out of 7 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles, 4 out of 10 Shahed-136/131 and Lancet attack drones, and 4 Orlan-10 and Supercam operational and tactical UAVs.
Over the course of the day, Russian forces conducted 8 missile strikes on civilian houses in the city of Zviahel, Zhytomyr Oblast, and on the outskirts of Kharkiv.
Russian forces also conducted 58 airstrikes and deployed multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) to conduct 31 attacks on positions of Ukrainian troops and on civilian settlements. Several civilians were injured or killed, and a number of private residential houses, a hospital, and other civilian infrastructure facilities sustained damage. There is an ongoing threat of Russian missile and airstrikes across the territory of Ukraine.
Russia continues to focus its main efforts on establishing full control over Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts; a total of 27 combat engagements occurred between Russian and Ukrainian forces over the course of the day.
DETAILS: The operational situation on the Volyn and Polissia fronts remains much the same as before. There is no evidence that Russia is forming offensive units there. Units of Russian forces are undergoing training on training grounds in the Republic of Belarus.
On the Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna fronts, Russia continues to maintain its forces in areas near the Russian-Ukrainian border, and is deploying units of territorial forces to reinforce its border defence. Over the course of today, Russian forces deployed mortars and artillery to fire on Karpovychi, Leonivka and Hremiach (Chernihiv Oblast); Khliborob, Sorokyne, Iskryskivshchyna, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Slavhorod and Velyka Pysarivka (Sumy Oblast); and over 20 civilian settlements in Kharkiv Oblast, including Basove, Veterynarne, Vysoka Yaruha, Izbytske, Verkhnia Pysarivka, Hatyshche, Vovchansk, Bochkove, Budarky and Zemlianky.

On the Marinka front, Ukraine’s defence forces repelled all Russian assaults near the city of Marinka, inflicting losses on Russian forces. Still, Russian troops shelled areas in and around Heorhiivka, Marinka, Ostrivske, Kurakhove, Dachne, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka and Katerynivka (Donetsk Oblast).
On the Shakhtarsk front, Russian forces conducted airstrikes in the vicinity of Velyka Novosilka and Blahodatne (Donetsk Oblast) and shelled Vuhledar, Shakhtarske, Novoukrainka, Zolota Nyva and Neskuchne (Donetsk Oblast).

“We are working at all levels of state and local authorities to rescue as many people as possible from the flooded areas. The evacuation is ongoing. Wherever we can get people out of the flood zone, we do so. The State Emergency Service, police and military are doing a great job! I want to thank each and every person involved! We are establishing more details about the damage Russia has caused by this disaster. In more than 40 settlements, life is broken. For hundreds of thousands of people in many towns and villages, access to drinking water has been greatly hampered. Russia must be held accountable for this deliberate crime against people, nature and life itself.”

Jeez…. Reverend Mother returns from MIA status. I feared you went off to be the commander of one of the German donated Leopard main battle tanks that the Russians blew up. The Leopard tanks were, of course, one of the Wunderwaffen that were to enable Ukraine to defeat Russia.
Anyway, I’m glad you stayed on assignment in the propaganda ministry and didn’t go forth to get yourself killed in battle. As they say in your Ministry, better to use other-people’s-money and spill other-people’s-blood.
