Horse racing at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, is suspended following the death of 12 horses at the track. Spring and summer races will be rescheduled to take place at Ellis Park. However, practice at Churchill Downs is still permitted for now.

A report on Horse Racing Nation stated the following about the tragic situation:

“Even though the investigations and expert reports have indicated no surface issues, in an abundance of caution, and in alignment with a recommendation from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, Churchill Downs Inc. has elected to relocate the meet in order to conduct a top-to-bottom review of all safety and surface protocols and integrity measures in collaboration and consultation with nationwide experts,” the statement said. A Churchill Downs spokesperson told Horse Racing Nation that training will be allowed to continue at the track after racing is suspended."

Did the horses get Covid-19 vaccines?

Which no doubt is outside the statistical norms but, as usual, the hullabaloo is being driven by PETA and other animal rights wackadoodles.

I agree with most of what you say but.....some owners might be getting a little apprehensive also.

The gaming monopoly and inability to adjust to competition is the reason for the decline.
Prior to that US racing handle tracked inflation for a couple of decades or was neither growing nor dying. As many new tracks opened as were closed and it was still the most attended sport in the nation.
Racing is not only ideally suited for the HD era, folks are generally in awe at the proceedings on their initial visits.

In the end it is abt gambling, they currently charge 20% which is prohibitive and folks that would be betting on it are playing poker, betting on sports, trading crypto etc.....now the sport which was the largest tax payer in the history of some states-MD, PA etc....is now a titanic sized welfare queen living off casino subsidies. It should be abolished in most states.

“Horses are a lot alike,” but when functioning approaches peak performance, they are significantly different.

Their diet, the exercise they need, the rest they need, the company some may need, the weather. For some, character changes.

There are individual limits of endurance and resilience that are not in agreement with the imaginations and temperments of some owners and managers.

There are injuries that are not externally detected and require more time to heal, but the time range is beyond the racing, scheduled.

One good thing-

abt 20yrs ago a degenerate general and a very nice lady convinced the armed services to employ retired race horses therapeutically to aid PTSD. This had shown promise with both physically and mentally challenged children.

Despite constant pushback fr the establishment as an alternative treatment-
it is now in place at close to 30 national facilities. They saved countless animals from slaughter and apparently it works even in difficult cases.

Non-winning horses are killed by nefarious means to collect the insurance money for them, which ends up more than they earned racing.

In movies and once in a lifetime.
Insurance companies are not dim enough to get taken time and again.

As soon as they start sending horsemen to prison this will stop.

Until then it is dirtier than Sosa/McGwire + Armstrong added together.

The proof beyond being obvious on the track daily, the leading trainers of the last 40yrs have produced very little stock congruent with the winning.

Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby. His injury was at the Preakness in Maryland.

Are you sure about that? I have been around racing for years and have never heard that. As I sit here thinking about it I guess I could see that happening with some of the unsavory characters I have met.

Why is it weird to say people have no connection to horses anymore, and thus are not interested in horse sports?

Only devoted farm people are into it. Few in the general population know anything about it and what it involves.

Thanks for the kind words.

Really? Why do so many claimed keep running for years on end every week? They run harder than the hot-house flowers in the upper champion echelon.

This is a common accusation even amongst the most bleeding-heart of racing fans, that there is slaughter. There is, but I’d like to see the numbers vs. how many race any year.

Could be any number of things, could be several different things. One needs to remember, these horses are trained to work at absolute maximum. Occasionally, a trainer goes beyond that absolute and the horse dies.
