Ukraine was one of the last non NATO countries that Putin had left to try and expand his empire. His thoughts on Ukraine and Ukrainian people is quite clear and they are not good.
Control over Ukrainians territory and its wealth of natural resources including food production would have given him great leverage over the world and that was the intent. Pooty has lamented the loss of power and prestige and this was his attempt to reestablish this.

Putins disaster is nearly completed. NATO surrounds him now with Finland now part of NATO, his paper military is a fraction of what it was, at the very least Russia is now subservient to China at worst China will expand its territory its north by absorbing eastern Russian territory
