He can write, and knows a lot of words.
But when writing political opinion/commentary, you have to be more direct and concise. It's not the place to show off your entire vocabulary or your ability to construct a long sentence.
The average human attention span is quite short - less than that of a goldfish - and with the advent of the Internet, it's been getting shorter all the time. You have to grab your readers fast, and keep them reading.
He just needs to practice more. and re-read to himself over and over, until he can see it as another would, and not through his own lens.
A good start is to follow Mark Twain's advice: "When you catch an adjective, KILL it...they weaken when they are close together. They give strength when they are far apart.”
(I think I'd add adverbs to that advice, too...)
