The Chinese project is for a permanent manned base, or several of them. It is quite a bit more complex than the visits we took to the moon.

It is a supremely expensive project without obvious benefits to the sponsoring countries. And yet there will likely be enormous and world-changing benefits in completely unexpected ways.

We are still living with the wealth produced by "space program spinoff" technology of the moon landings.

A little bit of foreign competition will be good for NASA, right now SpaceX is doing all the heavy lifting (pun intended) while NASA is in maintenance mode, trying to stay relevant.

You do understand that any Chinese base on the Moon will be:
1. under direct control of the CCP;
2. it will be a military base;
3. declared owned/controlled by China;
4. all other nations attempts to do the same will be met with deadly force.

Getting the astronauts back alive isn’t necessarily a “must do” part of their program.
