In my shop I use my rock solid XP machines to run two CNC machines and another that runs a CMM. The old engineering software on them still works fine and every once in a while I still use them for that. Of course I don’t use them on the web so not much of a problem with viruses and upgrades. I despise the new windows and their forced background updates that have wasted countless hours and cost me thousands of dollars.

Sounds bad. We run current Windows software here at work. IT manages it. Regular updates with few problems. Maybe IT tests the upgrades before they deploy them to all of us.
I have no concrete reason for upgrading so maybe I’ll keep putting it off.
I’m working on servo-controlling program. The source code, editing it, compiling and linking is done in the cloud. The executable is downloaded to my computer and I download that onto the device. The device sends printout back to my computer.
So my computer actually does very little in this overall job.

I’m not aware of “forced background updates” on Windows 10. My systems are set to “metered connection” and don’t update, foreground or background, until I want them to.
